Tap is the New Click

Even though the technology has been around for decades, only now are we starting to see mass production and adoption of touchscreen and gestural devices for the public. Jeff Han's influential 2006 TED demonstration of his multitouch system, followed by the launches of Nintendo's Wii, Apple's iPhone, and Microsoft Surface, have announced a new era of interaction design, one where gestures in space and touches on a screen will be as prominent as pointing and clicking.

But how do you create products for this new paradigm? While most of us know how to design desktop and web applications, what do you need to know to design for interactive gestures?

This introduction to designing gestural interfaces will cover the basics: usability and ergonomics; a brief history of the technology; some elemental patterns of use; prototyping and documenting; and how to communicate that a gestural interface is present to users.

wavefields

wavefields - a video shot by edward tufte shows the complex and beautiful, these elegant sketches suggest new methods for depicting vast amounts of information.Information is all around as ,some hidden yet subtle, some might show the oscillations of the water waves , some effect of water on a serene water surface, flow of clouds, velocity of waves etc. If actually taken astute cues these natural visualisation method can be well connected to inform our urge for ever growing information density,to present fluidity for smooth animated dataflows which we access everyday.Designer should be ready to experiment to break away from various flatlands which exists around us in print, web, screens for presenting information through layers, crossflows, animation etc to depict rich information in a way we percieve the world around us through our senses.

Design startups

Liked this talk of Jeffrey veen, he has been such an inspirations for design entrepreneurs out there.Jeffrey veen had started adaptive path and measure map. Measure map was acquired by google(google blog) ,and then jeff and his team created one of the amazing products from google stable- google analytics .Currently he has left google to create again a small startup known as small batch inc. My connection with jeffrey veen has been his wonderful book,"The art and science of web design". Quite an amazing guy.

Authors@Google: Avinash Kaushik

Avinash Kaushik is regarded by many the guru of analytics, off late I have been following his blog "occams razor". Though I have little understanding of analytics,  I think data from analytics can be used very efficiently for design , Marketing, usability engineering for the wild wild web. I feel Avinash's talks about analytics and data in such a lucid way which makes sense immediately.
